This wonderful book provides information on the history of potager gardens in Europe and kitchen gardens in the United States.  The second part of the book goes into great detail on how to design and build your own Potager Garden.  The author also gives a great reference list of herbs and vegetables to plant in the Spring, Summer and Autumn.

 The Kitchen Gardener's Handbook by Jennifer Bartley

How could we recommend Designing the New Kitchen Garden: An American Potager Handbook without recommending Jennifer Bartley's companion book The Kitchen Gardener's Handbook.  List Price $22.95 ON SALE for $15.61. This book supplements the first with detailed information on the types of vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers to plant in the potager garden you designed using the first book.  Jennifer includes plants for all four seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter.  This book serves as an excellent reference book on how to plant, grow, and maintain your potager/kitchen garden.  The author also includes some potager/kitchen garden designs you can modify easily to your front and back yard. We LOVE the design she created for the Edible Front Yard.   She has truly created a front yard that is beautiful throughout all four seasons and also provides food and flowers for your table.  For those working girls and working moms out there, what more can you love?  Design, form and function all in one!
